WESTPORT — The town’s annual collection of household hazardous wastes is set for April 5.
The event, free to town residents, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Greens Farms Railroad Station’s parking lot No. 1, off New Creek Road. Residents of Norwalk, New Canaan, Darien, Stamford and Greenwich are also eligible to participate.
Materials that will be accepted include: gasoline, kerosene, spray paint, paint strippers, paint thinners, solvents, paint, stains, turpentine, varnishes and wood preservatives.
Also, degreasers, fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, bleach, charcoal lighters, cleaning chemicals, drain cleaners, mercury thermometers, moth balls, pet flea shampoos, photo chemicals, rug shampoos and spot removers.
Materials that will not be accepted include: ammunition, flares and commercial hazardous waste.
Event organizers list the following guidelines for dropping off materials:
- Items should be clearly labeled and in original containers.
- Do not mix any chemical substances to prevent triggering a toxic reaction or explosion.
- Leaking containers should be placed in clear plastic bags.
- Items should be transported in cardboard boxes lined with paper.
- When driving to the collection site, place materials in the rear of the vehicle or trunk, away from passengers, and keep windows open. Children and pets should not accompany adults.
- Remain in the vehicle when materials are being removed.
Westport residents also can drop off materials, such as antifreeze, motor oil, batteries of any type, light bulbs and electronics, at the town’s Transfer Station, 300 Sherwood Island Connector, during regular hours: 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m.-noon Saturdays.
