WESTPORT — A fundraising campaign has been launched to help the family forced to jump from their second-floor apartment — with no more than the clothes on their back — as flames tore through the upper level of a Post Road East building late Wednesday.
The GoFundMe fundraiser has been posted by Cassidy Gleacher, of Monroe, to help her mother, Kerri, stepfather and brother, according to the webpage.
“They lost all of their belongings, their home and their pets,” Cassidy Gleacher wrote of her family. Her mother’s apartment was “above her job which there was extensive damage … I’m asking you to please help in any way you can so they can get back on their feet.”
The apartment was in the second story of the building housing the Townhouse for Dogs & Cats, 1040 Post Road East.
A fire erupted there about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, and although recently upgraded smoke detectors awakened Gleacher’s family, the exit already was blocked by flames.
The three apartment residents were forced to jump from the second-floor dwelling to avoid the fast-moving blaze, and although they were not seriously injured, according to the fire report, all of their possessions and their two dogs were lost in the fire.
About 50 dogs and cats being boarded at Townhouse, which had facilities on the first floor and basement levels of the building, were safely removed by firefighters and police.
“I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for their incredible contributions,” Cassidy Gleacher later wrote on the fundraising page Friday.
“My mother, as well as the rest of my family are so overwhelmed by all of your generosity, love and support. I can’t even begin to put into words just how grateful we are for everything.”
The fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
