WESTPORT — Train to become an emergency medical technician by enrolling in classes, starting Aug. 26, offered by the Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Service.
Those who successfully complete training qualify as a certified EMT.
Applicants must be 16 years old. Prior experience in the emergency-medical field is not necessary. Classes will generally take place weekday evenings, and several Saturdays, concluding in mid-December. Class size is limited and enrollment fills quickly, according to WVEMS officials.
To apply, fill out the form on the WVEMS website, where additional details about the course content, enrollment and tuition costs are posted.
Students will learn emergency-medical skills “from the ground up: from Band-Aids to multi-system trauma care,” according to the announcement.
The training, led by Rick Baumblatt, a paramedic and EMS instructor, recently was revamped “to assure the best chances at classroom success. and the ability for new members to be placed in service faster to begin their on-duty training with their crew chief,” WVEMS officials said.
“As we continue to update our programs and policies, this class and all others after it will continue the Westport tradition of saving lives while upholding part of our mission: offering the most up-to-date training and support possible,” Jaime Bairaktaris, the WVEMS president, said in the statement.
