WESTPORT — A forum exploring employment issues for people with disabilities will be hosted Oct. 22 by the town’s Commission on People with Disabilities.

The program, planned in conjunction with “National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” will take place at noon Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Westport Library. To reserve a place at the program, click here.

“Access to Good Jobs for All,” the theme for this year’s NDEAM observances, aligns with the commission’s “Employment is for Everyone” initiative.

The goal is to provide “tools and guidance” to help employers gain “a new perspective on the unique abilities and advantages of working with persons with disabilities,” according to organizers.

The Commission on People with Disabilities is focused on “employment because too often employers are hesitant to hire due to self-limiting perceptions, and fear or concerns over their capacity to provide ongoing support for employees with disabilities within their organizations,” Elaine Daignault, the town’s human services director, said in a statement announcing the program.

Westport, she added, is home to several businesses that productively employ people with disabilities in “a disability-friendly and inclusive culture.”
