National Weather Service map shows impact of snow/ice storm expected to move across the tri-state region starting Saturday afternoon. The area highlighted in pink — including Westport and the rest of southern Connecticut — is where the storm is expected to be most intense.

WESTPORT — A storm packing a wintry wallop of “heavy” snow and sleet is expected to rock the region starting Saturday afternoon until midday Sunday.

A “Winter Storm Warning” has been issued for southern Connecticut by the National Weather Service — from 5 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday — with total accumulations of between 5 to 7 inches predicted. The onslaught is expected to begin as all snow, intensifying overnight and then mix with icy precipitation early Sunday.

Saturday’s daytime high temperature is expected to be in the mid-30s range, dropping to the mid-20s overnight while snow is falling and then rise to the upper-30s Sunday as clouds clear and skies turn partly sunny by afternoon, according to the weather service.

Monday is expected to be sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-30s, but there is a chance of more snow both Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, the NWS predicts.
