WESTPORT — The Westport Garden Club will mark its centennial with  a special flower show, “Westport’s Town Treasures,” on Saturday.

The event, featuring exhibits in horticulture, floral design, photography and education, will take place from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28,  in Hoskins Hall of Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East. Suggested donation is $10, benefiting the club’s civic projects.

The event is the first official National Garden Club show hosted in nearly two decades by the Westport Garden Club, which at 100 years old is one of the oldest in New England.

Known by many for its sprawling plant sale every spring, the club’s members regularly undertake gardening and maintenance projects at several properties around town.

Notable among those projects is the club’s pivotal role in creation of Grace K. Salmon Park, which began in 1970 with remediation of a one-time landfill. Following the removal of debris and garbage littering the site and planting native trees, the site became a town park in 1977. The club was awarded the Lucille B. Droge Mauntel Certificate for Conservation by the National Council of Garden Clubs for its work on the park.

To mark the club’s centennial, club members earlier this year donated a sundial that was installed in Salmon Park.

The Saturday flower show, in addition to paying tribute to Westport landmarks and cultural sites, will include participation by local groups committed to a healthy environment and sustainability: Westport’s Pollinator Pathway, Aspetuck Land Trust, Earthplace, Friends of Sherwood Island State Park and the town’s Conservation Department.
