WESTPORT — As work continues on a new Big Y supermarket slated to open at the Post Plaza shopping center in October, officials of the Massachusetts-based chain this week announced plans to hire more than 100 store employees.
On-site applications will be accepted at the new store, 1076 Post Road East, from Aug. 26 through Oct. 18, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.
Online applications can be filed via the Big Y website by clicking here.
Jobs to be filled — full- and part-time — are in every department of the new store, including bakery, meat/seafood, deli/kitchen, produce/floral, managers and assistant managers, cashiers and overnight stock clerks, according to the store’s job posting.
“We are dedicated to fostering growth, not only for our business, but also for our employees. Our commitment to providing career opportunities goes hand in hand with our focus on building a strong community,” Ashley McFarlane, Big Y’s employment manager, said in a statement.
Big Y’s employee benefits include what officials say are “competitive” wages, paid holidays, paid time off, tuition assistance, scholarships, a 401(k) plan and a work/life care program. All new employees also receive “comprehensive training,” the statement said.
The local Big Y is taking over a site once planned for an Amazon Fresh store, a new concept in food retailing equipped with technology for “cashier-less checkout,” digital billing and numerous online shopping options.
But by last January, when work at the site had stalled more than 18 months following initial preparations, Amazon pulled the plug on its Westport project. By then, other Amazon Fresh sites also had been left in “zombie” status as company officials paused the stores’ rollout to reconsider the concept.
Instead, owners of the Post Plaza confirmed that Big Y would be taking over the space, which once was the site of a Barnes & Noble bookstore that had moved downtown.
In April, the circular, red Big Y logo sign was approved for the new store by the Architectural Review Board after one hearing. Amazon officials, on the other hand, had struggled to win approval for a sign for their planned store, which won backing only after several hearings and revisions to the original design. And, in the end, the Amazon Fresh sign was never installed on the storefront.
