WESTPORT — An entire audience — except for one person — at a high school theatrical production falls unconscious.

How? Why??

“Trap,” a play exploring the bizarre mystery of the real-life occurrence, will be performed May 23-25 by the Staples Players at Staples High School, 70 North Ave.

The performances, staged in the school’s Black Box Theatre, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25, as well as 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Tickets for the limited seating can be reserved by clicking here.

The play, written by Stephen Gregg, combines elements of “the intellectual stimulation of a documentary, the suspense of a murder mystery and the adrenaline rush of a horror film,” according to Staples Players’ publicity for the show.

The production, with a cast of 22 actors, is co-directed by David Roth and Kerry Long.

“Working with limited music, props and set pieces has forced us to really hone in on our characters and their motivations, which is so rewarding but requires intense concentration, especially during such a short show process,” Josy Pitaro, a senior who plays the lone person to escape the fate of the rest of the audience, said in the show’s publicity statement.

Performing in the round at the Black Box Theatre “allows for a closer connection to the audience, and for them to be enveloped into the story, but it also poses a challenge as an actor,” said Henry Carson, a senior who plays a detective investigating the case. “We have to work on ensuring that all angles of the audience are shown the story, something that can at first be odd to wrap our heads around, but in the end makes the scenes flow more naturally.”
