“Theatre People,” by Paul Slade Smith, is described as a new adaptation of Ferenc Molnár’s farce, “Play at the Castle,” according to playhouse publicity.

The play, set in 1948 at a Newport mansion, focuses “on theatre people who are trying to write a surefire Broadway hit, but create as much drama among themselves as on paper,” according to the publicity release.

The presentation is directed by Mark Shanahan, curator of the Script in Hand series and the incoming artistic director for the playhouse.

The “play captures the snappy banter of an old-fashioned, backstage comedy while having just enough of a modern sensibility to turn this adaptation of a classic into something fresh and new,” Shanahan said in the release.

The cast features Shereen Ahmed, Erin Noel Grennan, Beth Leavel, John Rapson, Rodolfo Soto and Lee Wilkof. Stage directions will be read by Joanna Parson.
