WESTPORT — A staged reading of a play based on a trial in pre-Revolutionary America, involving issues of slavery and mysterious death, will be presented Sunday by the Westport Community Theatre.

“The Winter’s Coast,” a courtroom drama by David Chacko, will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave. Admission is free.

The play, according to a publicity release, is based on a 1774 trial in which a slave owner sued a ship’s captain over the loss of his property after his slave died aboard a merchant ship.

The trial highlighted a clash over issues of racism and the institution of slavery, according to the WCT, that reverberated in American history long afterward.

The cast of the play reading includes: Michael Boland, David DeRosa, Josh Eaddy, Larry Greeley, David Hartigan, Will Jeffries, Ann Kinner, Alexander Kulcsar,  Phil Lorenzo, Sam Mink, Rob Pawlikowski, Tom Petrone, and Matthieu Regney.

The production is directed by Ruth Anne Baumgartner.
