WESTPORT–The Westport Community Theatre will present Thornton Wilder’s 1954 comedy The Matchmaker, directed by Mark Frattaroli, over the next three weekends. According to the release, this beloved American classic remains as fresh, funny, and heartwarming today as when it first delighted audiences decades ago.

Featuring Lucy Babbitt as Dolly Gallagher Levi, the cast includes Ari Benmosche, TJ Chila, Rayne Darken, Henry Durham, Betsy Grover, Martha Hegley, Emily Roberson, Patrick Spaulding, Rick Stewart, Erin Wallace, and Jordan Weisblatt, under the stage management of Patricia Berg.

Audiences familiar with Hello, Dolly! will delight in discovering the original source material, while newcomers will find a richly entertaining comedy that inspired one of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals. Thornton Wilder’s brilliant dialogue, memorable characters, and keen observations about human nature have made The Matchmaker a favorite of audiences for generations.

At the center of the story is Dolly Gallagher Levi, a role originated by Ruth Gorden at the Edinburgh Festival. Dolly is a widow, entrepreneur, and self-appointed matchmaker whose greatest talent is understanding people – especially when they don’t understand themselves. When wealthy Yonkers merchant Horace Vandergelder decides it’s time to find a wife, he turns to Dolly for help. Before long, Dolly, Horace, two adventurous clerks, and a pair of enterprising milliners are swept into a series of unexpected encounters stretching from Yonkers to New York City.

As plans go awry, Wilder creates one of the great comedies of the American stage – a sparkling tale of romance, second chances, and the delightful unpredictability of human nature, filled with wit, warmth, and unforgettable characters.
