WESTPORT–Rising actress-singer Linedy Genao, currently a lead player in the Broadway musical The Great Gatsby, will bring songs that shaped her Dominican roots and have propelled her career to a performance at the Westport Country Playhouse this month.
“Linedy Genao: Songs from My Sala,” will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Playhouse, 25 Powers Court, Westport. Genao’s singing will be backed by piano, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, saxophone, Latin percussion (tambura, güira, cajon), drums and two singers.
Songs will include some contemporary Spanish language favorites, as well as “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Waving Through a Window,” “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” and “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”
From living room to Broadway
“In ‘Songs from My Sala,’ I want to share my unique story from my very first performance stage, my living room,” said Genao. “I knew I wanted to do a concert that felt like me and from the place that started it all. I wanted it to be authentic, bringing the audience along my journey from performing in my living room, my sala, to the stages of Broadway.”
Born in Brooklyn, Genao was raised in Hamden, Connecticut, where she became a fixture on stage in Hamden High School theater productions before her graduation in 2009.
“At Hamden High, she portrayed The Witch in Into The Woods, Lola in Damn Yankees, Esther in To Gillian On Her 37th Birthday and Smitty in How To Succeed,” according to the Hamden Public Schools’ Notable Alumni webpage.
First Latina lead in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical
Genao’s first Broadway experience came in 2015 as a cast member of On Your Feet! according to the Internet Broadway Database. In 2023, Genao became the first Latina performer to originate a leading role in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical on Broadway as the star of Bad Cinderella. She was later named to Variety’s “10 Broadway Actors to Watch” list.
She joined the cast of The Great Gatsby on March 31, playing Myrtle Wilson, the mistress of Jay Gatsby’s rival, Tom Buchanan.
Genao’s other Broadway credits include Dear Evan Hansen. Off-Broadway, she appeared in Women on Fire. Her experience in regional theater includes Passing Through, West Side Story, Havana Music Hall, A Taste of Things to Come, and In the Heights. Television and film credits are Death Saved My Life and Law & Order.
She recently appeared on the Playhouse stage as Tania in the play Native Gardens.
