WESTPORT — “Next to Normal,” a Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, will be the first production staged for the 92nd season of the Westport Country Playhouse, opening next month.

Preview performances start April 5; opening night is April 9, and the run continues through April 24 at the playhouse, 25 Powers Court. Tickets range in price from $35 to $55, and can be purchased online by clicking here.

Next to Normal,” which focuses on how one person’s struggles with mental illness can affect an entire family, won three Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, when it opened on Broadway in 2009. A year later, it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The playhouse production is directed and choreographed by Marcos Santana, who directed the theater’s production of “In the Heights” in 2019.

The cast is led by Wilson Jermaine Heredia, a Tony Award winner for his portrayal of Angel in “Rent,” and Darlesia Cearcy, who played Erzulie in the Tony Award-winning revival of “Once on This Island.”

The show also will feature a six-piece orchestra performing the pop/rock score by Tom Kitt. The book and lyrics are by Brian Yorkey.

“It’s a powerful piece of musical theater, with a great score, and some absolutely amazing performers,” Mark Lamos, the playhouse artistic director, said in a statement announcing the show.

“In choosing ‘Next to Normal,’ Marcos [Santana], director, said  it would be exciting to explore how issues presented in this musical challenge communities of color as much as they do white families.”
