WESTPORT — “Kim’s Convenience,” a comedy about a Korean family who run a convenience store, is the next production planned at the Westport Country Playhouse, opening July 5.

The play, which inspired a television series, will be staged from July 5 though July 17, at the theater, 25 Powers Court.

Single tickets for “Kim’s Convenience” start at $30 during preview performances, July 5-8; beginning July 9 opening night, tickets start at $50, subject to change based upon availability. Tickets can be purchased online by clicking here.

The 2012 Toronto Theatre Critics Award for Best Canadian Play, the play was written by Ins Choi. The playwright will be guest speaker at a program following the play’s Sunday, July 10, matinee performance.

The play tells the story of a “fractured but loving family as they follow their dreams,” according to the theater’s publicity release.

Appa and Umma Kim run a convenience store, “Kim’s Convenience,” in a Toronto neighborhood. The father hopes daughter Janet will take over the store when he retires, but she has other career plans. And the couple’s son ran away from home as a teen.

The cast includes David Shih as Appa Kim, Chuja Seo as Umma, Cindy Im as Janet, Hyunmin Rhee as Jung and Eric R. Williams as Alex.

“In our season of family stories, the one in this sweet, funny, sharp, and ultimately moving play will remind you of your own, no matter what your cultural background may be,” Mark Lamos, the playhouse artistic director, said in the publicity release.
