WESTPORT — Proud Westport families gathered Friday morning at The Westport Woman’s Club to celebrate their graduating seniors’ outstanding achievements.
Seven Staples High School seniors received scholarships for college in a ceremony that included town and state officials.
“With the exorbitant costs of college these days, every bit of help really makes a significant difference.” said parent Michael Evans.

“We are just so grateful to the Westport Woman’s Club and all that they do to help kids like this and to give them these opportunities,” he said.
Following a rigorous competition, the scholarships were awarded based on academic standing, a written essay, and evidence of involvement in the community.
“It was delightful going through the selection process,” said Donna Sedgwick, co-chair of the Scholarship Committee.

Other officials at the event included U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, who congratulated students on behalf of the entire community as he gave out congressional certificates of appreciation and merit.
“Nobody succeeds in this world all by themselves,” he said, “so never forget that, part of what you’re holding [in your hands] is a token of our hopes and our desires to see you succeed.”

The club has a long history of giving scholarships to young people in the community. Among their largest fundraisers for the initiative is the upcoming Yankee Doodle Fair, opening Thursday.
“All of the students are smart, active kids who are interested in the community,” Barbara Raffel, a committee member, said of those who were selected.
The event was held at the club’s Imperial Avenue location, with refreshments and a lot of picture taking.
“This scholarship is going to be a huge help towards my future,” said recipient Olivia Pace. “I really want to major in business (and) this will be a huge help for the next step in my life.”
