WESTPORT — A new adaptation of the thriller “Dial M for Murder” will take the stage July 11 at the Westport Country Playhouse.
The play, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from the original play by Frederick Knott — who scripted Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1954 film version of the drama — will be performed July 11-29 at the playhouse, 25 Powers Court.

The production is directed by Mark Lamos, the final show under his direction as he retires after 15 seasons as the theater’s artistic director in January.
“Dial M for Murder” will be the last show staged from the initial slate of 2023 theatrical productions announced by the playhouse. Three others have been cancelled because of the “tenuous financial position” the theater faces trying to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to playhouse officials.
Last week, theater officials announced the launch of “Reimagined: Save Your Playhouse,” a campaign to raise an “immediate and necessary $2 million” by July 30. The campaign also includes plans to broaden the playhouse’s presentations beyond traditional live-theater productions to achieve “a more sustainable and efficient cost structure.”

The “Dial M for Murder” adaptation to be staged in Westport, which premiered last year in California, has been approved by the estate of the original play’s author, Knott, according to the playhouse’s publicity for the show.
“Even if you think you know ‘Dial M for Murder’ backwards and forwards, I assure you, you’ll find new and exciting surprises as Jeffrey’s version sweeps towards its dramatic conclusion,” Lamos said in the publicity release.
The cast includes: Kate Burton, a Broadway, film and television performer, known for her roles on the TV programs “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal;” Patrick Andrews, stage, television and musical performer; Kate Abbruzzese, whose acting roles include “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on television; Krystel Lucas, who has acted in theater and television roles, including “Jessica Jones” on Netflix, and Denver Milord, who has appeared in the film “Jack Reacher” and television’s “Blue Bloods.”
