WESTPORT–The Artists Collective of Westport will unveil a 48-square-foot mural and introduce a collection of artworks inspired by American history at The Westport Library on June 4.
The mural, “Piece by Piece,” standing 6 feet high and 8 feet wide, was inspired by an iconic work of art, the identity of which is a secret. It was assembled from 48 square panels, each reimagined by a different member of the Collective of Westport.
The artists were not told the identity of the original artwork. Each received a printout of a section, one foot squared, and a blank panel to interpret it, using whatever material they chose.
“The result is a vibrant and often surprising mosaic of styles, perspectives, and artistic voices — a playful yet powerful celebration of community, creativity, and collaboration,” said a release from the Collective.
It is mounted in the Trefz Forum, left of the stage.
The collection of works, “American Journeys,” was inspired by this year’s America 250 celebration of the nation’s semiquincentennial.
“The title reflects the idea that there is no single American journey, but rather a tapestry of countless personal paths, experiences, struggles, and triumphs that together define the American story,” the release said.
More than 60 members of the Collective contributed work to the exhibition, offering diverse artistic expressions and interpretations. All works are available for purchase and are on view in the Sheffer and South Galleries at the Westport Library.
Both exhibits open on June 4, at 6 p.m. for American Journeys with the unveiling of Piece by Piece at 7 p.m.
