WESTPORT — Staples girls lacrosse team’s season record improved to 8-2 with a pair of polar opposite victories about 12 hours apart this weekend.

First, the Wreckers edged host Masuk of Monroe 11-10 in a non-conference clash Friday night. Then came a quick turnaround, a Saturday morning clash with visiting FCIAC foe Fairfield Warde, yielding a 20-9 Staples triumph.

Against South-West Conference opponent Masuk, the Wreckers fell behind 8-5, pulled to within 8-7 at halftime and capped of a string of four consecutive goals to go in front 9-8 early in the third quarter.

Kali Knesich tied the game and Chloe Smith gave the Wreckers a 9-8 edge with goals less than a minute apart in the opening few minutes out of the break.

After Masuk tied the score, Alex Hackett netted one with 1:34 left in the third and the Wreckers carried a 10-9 edge into the fourth.

Maeve Best was set up by Hackett to push the lead to 11-9, and outstanding goaltending by Alexandra Kim, along with late-game possession by the Wreckers, helped seal the win.

Noelle Tybur had three goals and an assist; Smith finished with two goals and five assists; Bryn Morris had two goals; Best also scored twice, and Hackett had a goal and an assist.

In the Warde game, the Wreckers got a trio of hat-tricks. Smith had three goals and an assist; Morris three goals and five draw controls, and Daisy Hackett netted three goals. 

Alex Hackett scored twice, assisted three times and had two draw controls; Tybur and Knesich both had two goals and an assist; Blake DeWitt scored twice; Best and Riley Kosakowski both had a goal and an assist, and Molly Whittle added a goal.

Addie Talbott had five draw controls and Kim made five saves.
