To the editor,
I write to add my voice to the chorus of supporters for Jonathan Steinberg, to re-elect him as our state representative.
As chair of the Westport Board of Education, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Jonathan on a number of school-related issues. Jonathan, a proud Staples graduate himself and father to three daughters who were graduated from Westport public schools, is a champion for our district. He recognizes our excellence and represents our interests in Hartford.
Recently, Jonathan broke ranks with Democratic leadership to vote in favor of delaying implementation of the statewide bill that mandates specific textbooks and timelines for our reading program. (For the record, our literacy curriculum comports with all aspects of the “science of reading” — and both our test scores and enthusiastic, high-achieving readers attest to it.) In that vote, Jonathan proved he is willing to support our specific, local needs against ill-conceived state dictates. He votes for what’s best for Westport.
In every instance, I find with Jonathan a partner who listens to understand. He is curious and open-minded, and even when we disagree, I know that he appreciates my point of view. And even when he cannot effect the change we prefer, he works with his colleagues in Hartford — both Democrats and Republicans — to message our position and make incremental progress.
I hope you will join me in voting for Jonathan Steinberg on Tuesday, Nov. 5 (or sooner with early voting).

I’d like to continue to support Jonathan… however I need to know what his solutions, for the massive traffic problems our residential neighborhoods adjacent to I-95 suffer, are. I have heard him say the Cribari Bridge needs to be replaced, but will he guarantee a replacement will not allow the truck traffic that will destroy all residential neighborhoods near I-95? How high on his priorities are the rights of residential Westporters to a good quality of life, reducing noise and air pollution?
