MILFORD — It was one heck of a Senior Day for Tyler DiMaio and the Staples High hockey team. DiMaio scored a hat-trick as part of a four-point performance as the Wreckers defeated Milford, 5-2, Monday.
In the battle of the barn — Staples and Milford both call Milford Ice Pavilion home — the teams were deadlocked 2-2 in the third period.
Trey Wilson broke the tie as the Wreckers lit the lamp three times in the final stanza.
DiMaio scored in each period and Derek Wolgast also found the back of the net. Wolgast and Wilson both had a pair of assists and each finished with three points.
Uzi Greenman, Jameson Russell and Harry Goodburn, along with DiMaio, also helped set up tallies. Mason Mountain was in goal and made 15 saves.
“The coaches are proud of how these seven seniors have grown and how they are leading the way,” Head Coach Matt Bohn said of Matthew Katzman, Wolgast, Felix Haug, Russell, DiMaio, Wilson and Jacob Gomez.
The Wreckers were coming off a hard-fought 4-3 setback to Trumbull, also in Milford, on Saturday. Wilson scored twice and DiMaio also found the net in the Trumbull game. Wolgast and DiMaio had two assists apiece and Wilson had a helper. Mountain made 32 saves to keep the Wreckers in the game.
Staples returns to action Wednesday with a visit to the Brien McMahon-Norwalk co-op at SoNo Ice House; faceoff is at 8:50 p.m. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
