WESTPORT — Nearly three months after gunshots were fired from a vehicle speeding through Saugatuck, police on Friday charged a 17-year-old from Stratford in connection with the July 11 incident, and said more arrests are expected.
The juvenile, held at the Manson Youth Institute in Cheshire on unrelated charges, was charged by Westport police with unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, breach of peace, conspiracy to commit unlawful discharge of a firearm, conspiracy to commit first-degree reckless endangerment and conspiracy to commit breach of peace.
The charges were lodged after an investigation by Westport police detectives, who conducted numerous interviews and issued multiple search warrants, according to the report.
The suspect is scheduled for an Oct. 13 appearance at state Juvenile Court in Bridgeport.
The incident, which rattled the Saugatuck neighborhood, unfolded about 9:45 p.m. July 11 when the emergency dispatch center began receiving “911” calls reporting “multiple” shots fired in the area of Saugatuck Avenue and Franklin Street, police said at the time.
Officers were dispatched to the area, where witnesses reported hearing gunfire from a “nondescript” white vehicle spotted traveling north on Franklin Street, then north on Saugatuck Avenue and turning west on Sunrise Road, police said.
Police found no evidence that anyone or anything was struck by gunfire.
Three spent bullet casings were later recovered on Sunrise Road by police investigating the case.
Audio of 10 gunshots, recorded by an internal surveillance device at a nearby business, also was provided to police investigators.
