WESTPORT — To support “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” a local collection of used cell phones and iPads will be donated to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center of Norwalk and Stamford.
The collection, organized by the town’s Department of Human Services and the Westport Domestic Violence Task Force, is planned in conjunction with several events designed to raise awareness about services provided by DVCC to victims of domestic violence and their children in Westport and nearby communities.
Donated cell phones or iPads (not more than four years old) should be re-set to factory settings. The phones are given to DVCC clients “to ensure their safety and avoid possible tracking by their abuser,” according to program organizers.
Electronics are being collected in bins at Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave., and the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave., accessible Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., though the end of October.
Local events planned throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month include:
Friday, Oct. 6, 11 a.m.: Domestic Violence Month proclamation issued at Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road. Open to public.
Wednesday, Oct. 18, 7 p.m.: Westport Domestic Violence Task Force hosts screening and discussion of “The Fire That Took Her” at Westport’s Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave. Free and open to the public.
Thursday, Oct. 19: Supporters of the initiative are encouraged to wear purple and purchase coffee with the Domestic Violence Awareness coffee sleeve at participating stores — Kneads, Donut Crazy, Coffee An, The Porch and Winfield Street Coffee — and take a selfie and join the social media campaign using the hashtag #purplethursday and tag @DVCCCT and @WESTPORTDOMESTICVIOLENCETASKFORCE on Facebook.
