WESTPORT — A new documentary about the 1972 Munich Olympics, as recounted by an Israeli athlete who survived the massacre of 11 compatriots by Palestinian terrorists, will be screened Dec. 12 at the Westport Library.
“The Survivor” will be presented by ESPN reporter Jeremy Schaap at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, in the library’s Trefz Forum, 20 Jesup Road. To reserve a seat, click here.
Schaap, winner of 11 Emmy Awards for sports reporting and investigative journalism, is the lead reporter and narrator of the documentary.
“The Survivor” focuses on the story of Shaul Ladany, now 86, an Israeli race walker who survived the terror attack on Israel’s team at the Summer Olympics 50 years ago. He also survived World War II and the Holocaust as a child.
“In his long life, Shaul Ladany has seen up close the worst of humanity,” Schaap said in a publicity release for the program. “Not only has he survived, he has pressed forward, constantly, to lead a life of achievement …
“I was honored to be part of the team that told the story of what he endured and what he witnessed. Ladany’s story is not so well-known here in the United States — but it should be,” he added.
Others interviewed in the documentary include Zelig Shtroch, Ladany’s roommate and a shooter on the Israeli Olympic team; Shlomo Levy, an Israeli photojournalist who was embedded with the team in Munich, and Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, the special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism.
