WESTPORT – The Staples High football team got a solid all-around start from quarterback Caleb Smith and defeated visiting Conard of West Hartford 42-13 last night.
Smith ran for more than 100 yards, rushed for three scores and passed for a pair of touchdowns.
Also scoring for the Wreckers were seniors Tyler Clark, James Hillhouse and junior Alex Fiala.

Smith, a junior in his first varsity start, was sharp in his passing game and demonstrated excellent running ability throughout the night.
Conard was led by quarterback Brendan Grady who drove the Red Wolves into Staples territory on multiple occasions, scoring a pair of TDs.
Staples will visit St. Joseph of Trumbull in the team’s first FCIAC matchup, next Saturday, Sept. 17; kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
