WESTPORT–Westport’s Wheels2U service is joining with Norwalk Community Health Center (NCHC) to bring patients with transportation challenges to the center’s medical mobile unit (MMU) at Jesup Green each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The mobile unit provides essential medical and behavioral health services for individuals facing transportation or other barriers to care. It was brought back to Westport by Homes with Hope, which recognized an unmet need in the community following the COVID pandemic.

“Wheels2U, Westport’s on-demand transportation service, already serves Jesup Green during the MMU’s Tuesday hours so this partnership is a natural fit,” said Peter Gold, a Director of the Westport Transit District.  “We’re proud to help those without reliable transportation get to the medical and wellness care they need.”

Passengers can book a ride using Wheels2U’s app or by calling 475-258-7893. Wheels2U’s fare is $2 – and new users get their first five rides free.

“NCHC is excited to partner with Wheels2U to make healthcare more accessible,” said Kelcey Hix, a licensed clinical social worker with the MMU in Westport. She added, “Reliable, safe and convenient transportation” helps older adults and underserved populations access healthcare systems “and has a direct impact on individual and community well-being.”

Westport Human Services Director Elaine Daignault said, “Wheels2U makes it easy and affordable for residents to get to the Medical Mobile Unit right in downtown Westport. It’s a simple way to access a range of health services close to home, and our team at Westport Human Services is available to help residents sign up and provide support or Wheels2U vouchers if needed.”

NCHC provides services to nearly 13,000 patients in Fairfield County, many of them uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to afford healthcare.
