It is with deep sadness that we announce that Alfred Gwilliam, age 92, of Westport, passed away on March 19, 2026. Alfred leaves behind his loving wife, Irmgard, a son Alfred, Jr. and a granddaughter Sophia, who called him “Opa” with great love and affection.
The immediate family also includes his sister-in-law Rosemarie Mannino and son-in-law Guy Edward Thomas. He is predeceased by his daughter Jennifer Rosemarie Gwilliam-Thomas of London, UK and his sister Patricia Clapham of England.
He came to America in 1957, having trained as a chemist and earning a Master’s degree in international business at the University of San Francisco. He was employed by Stauffer Chemical Company in San Francisco, from where he was transferred to Westport in 1969.
Outside of work, his interest was in classical and modern art and in classical music, which was a joy he shared with his wife.
He also enjoyed hiking with Irmgard, in the mountains of Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
Westport was his home for 57 years, where he participated in civic life, the senior center and, in particular, its community gardens.
He will be missed and remembered by all whose lives he touched as a gentle and wise man.
