WESTPORT – After a tough loss against an elite St Joseph team, the Wreckers boys basketball team was brimming with enthusiasm ahead of yesterday’s game against the Norwalk Bears. It was senior night and the hometown fans were loud, cheering the Wreckers’ every achievement.

But it was junior Chris Zajac, with his best game as a Wrecker, who propelled the team. Coming off his 22-point game against St Joe’s, he had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 18 points. Senior captain Derek Sale added eight points in the big win.

Staples jumped out early, going on an 8-2 run after the tip-off. Norwalk then got on track, but Staples still led 12-6 going into the second quarter.

Norwalk racked up a few scores in the second before Staples regained their defensive strength. Even behind great play from Norwalk senior Cam Edwards, the Bears were unable to lead at any part of the game. At the half, Staples led by 26-14.

Staples junior Cody Sale, with nine points for the night, banged a trey late in the fourth, which put a dagger in the Bears’ hopes.

Staples picked up the important win, 50-34. They now stand at 13-5.

Staples will close out their regular season next week. They’ll host the 2-13 McMahon Senators on Monday, and travel to Darien on Wednesday against the 8-9 Blue Wave.
