DANBURY–Staples girls basketball came from behind to force overtime before seizing a 55-47 win at Danbury on Thursday.

The Wreckers led 14-10 after one quarter of play but were held to a pair of points in the second and trailed 18-16 going into halftime. The Hatters pulled ahead 34-28 after three. Staples outscored Danbury 18-12 in the fourth to get the game into OT. From there, the Wrecker defense took over as Staples limited the Hatters to only a free throw in extra time.

Chloe Smith had a great game with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Asiel logged 13 points, eight rebounds and a trio of assists. Freya Harvey had 11 points, eight assists, four steals and two blocks. Addie Talbott recorded six points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Riley Caney had three of Staples’ 10 blocks.

The Wreckers improved to 15-2 overall and 10-2 in FCIAC play. Danbury stands at 8-4 in the conference.

Up next is a home game on Tuesday as St. Joseph of Trumbull comes to town tied with the Wreckers for second in the conference standings. There are three games remaining before the postseason.
