Staples baseball, the No. 9 seed in the Class LL State Tournament, saw its season come to an end in a 7-0 loss at No. 8 Southington in the second round on Tuesday.
The Wreckers committed four errors and allowed five unearned runs. Southington scored twice in the opening frame and built on its lead with five in the second. The Wreckers stopped the damage there but could not string together enough hits to break through.
Bruce Schlegelmilch had two hits, including a double, and Cole Landgraf, Jake Goldshore, Andrew Oppenheimer, and Mark Kelly all collected hits.
It was a strong overall season for the Wreckers who went 13-7 during the regular slate. Southington, which went 14-6, moves on to face No. 32 Glastonbury in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Glastonbury upset top seed Amity of Woodbridge and No. 16 Fairfield Ludlowe to advance.
