WEST HARTFORD — No. 11 Staples baseball went on the road and defeated No. 6 Hall 6-2 in Tuesday’s Class LL State Tournament second-round action.
The Wreckers will clash with 14th-ranked Norwalk, who upset No. 3 Glastonbury.
Staples hosts their familiar FCIAC foes Saturday at 12 p.m., with the winner advancing to the June 9 neutral site semifinal round against either No. 2 Southington or No. 10 Fairfield Ludlowe.
In the win over Hall, the Wreckers trailed 1-0 after one inning and 2-1 through two frames. It remained that way until Staples pushed across a pair of runs to grab the lead in the sixth and scored three more to pad its advantage in the seventh.
Chase Landgraf, who had a triple, and Bruce Schlegelmilch both drove in two runs. Nolan Walters and Connor Brill each contributed an RBI.
Schlegelmilch pitched four innings of three-hit ball and allowed only one earned run with two walks and six strikeouts. Charlie Fitch and Lukas Snow combined for three innings of two-hit, scoreless ball.
Staples, Norwalk and Ludlowe are among six FCIAC teams still in the mix of the remaining eight teams in the bracket with Fairfield Warde, Trumbull and Danbury all advancing to the quarters.
