NEW HAVEN–Wilbur Cross rode a pair of first-half goals to a 2-0 victory over Staples last night, in the opening round of the “LL” (extra large schools) state tournament.

The match, at New Haven’s Bowen Field, ended the Wreckers’ season. The #25-ranked Westporters finish the year 7-9-1. The #8-seeded Governors advance to the second round, against Newington.

Chasing the game in the second half, Staples played some of the best soccer of their year. But excellent Cross goalkeeping denied their several chances.

The Wreckers graduate just five senior starters. Among the returnees are players who accounted for 18 of their 25 goals this year.
