WESTPORT — The Staples football team beat FCIAC rival Trumbull, 35-18, Friday night, notching their seventh victory against only one defeat for the season.

Junior Anthony Armentano returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, including one to open the second half, effectively icing the game before a hometown crowd.

The defense put forth a gritty effort against Trumbull’s strong running attack and forced three turnovers.

Quarterback Caleb Smith led a balanced offensive that featured a strong running game by senior Alex Fiala, Armentano and himself.

Senior tight end Ryan Skolnick made three key receptions.

Senior co-captains Sammy Petrosino and Andrew Rossman led the defense.

This is always a big matchup as Trumbull Coach Marce Petrocchio faces off against the school that he led to two state championships and more than 200 wins during his time at Staples.

This year, the game also featured five former Staples players, all of whom played for Petrocchio, being inducted into the school’s Wall of Fame.

The honorees are: Brian Levine, D.J. Stefkovich, Rob Gau, Matt Kelly and Josh Cozzens. James Frusciante and Joey Zellkowitz also were inductees, but were unable to attend.
