NORWICH — Coach Matt Bohn’s Staples High hockey team earned a gritty 3-3 tie Saturday with the Division II Eastern Connecticut Eagles at Rose Garden Arena.

In the Wreckers’ regular season finale, they earned two points to clinch a spot in the Division III State Tournament, set to begin March 4. The team finished the season at 7-12-1.

Cooper Paul scored twice and Jameson Russell had a goal. Felix Haug, Trey Wilson, Tyler DiMaio, Harry Goodburn and Russell all had assists. 

Goalie Mason Mountain made 42 saves as the Wreckers were outshot 45-32.

The Wreckers were coming off a 4-0 loss to Westhill-Stamford at Milford Ice Arena on Feb. 19 and a 5-3 setback against Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury-Immaculate at Danbury Ice Arena on Feb. 21. 

Against BBDI, the Wreckers trailed 3-0 through two periods but made a game of it in the third. Derek Wolgast, Jacob Gomez and Wilson had the Staples goals. DiMaio, Gomez, Wolgast and Brett Malizia recorded assists. Mountain made 21 saves and Alistair Mukhtar had six stops in a combined goaltending effort for the Wreckers.
