WESTPORT — Following several weeks of cold, wet and grueling tryouts, the Staples High girls golf team is ready to swing into a new season.

Coaches Patty Kondub, the 2022 FCIAC Coach of the Year, and Maureen Fontana have high hopes for her Wreckers.

The season is set to begin Tuesday versus Darien at the Country Club of Darien starting at 3 p.m. However, with rain again in the forecast, the match may be moved up a day to Monday.

The home opener is not until Tuesday, April 23, when St. Joseph of Trumbull visits Longshore Golf Course, also at 3 p.m.

Varsity captains are seniors and returning varsity starters Maia Gubitz and Erin Oldale.

Junior Rachel Pontoriero and sophomore Katelynn Mitchell are also returning varsity starters.

Junior transfer Lauren Clementi and seniors Cammie Rubino and Eliza Edwards will fill out the starting varsity lineup.

Junior Aviva Ross and freshmen Katie Jang and Eliza Wadley are also on part of the squad.

JV captains heading up a squad of 25 are seniors Isabel Puchert and Kate Barnes.

“No doubt we are the biggest [35 girls], most promising and most fun team in the state,” Kondub said.

“There is huge potential in every girl that made the team. A few years ago we had a freshman who never played golf make the team,” said Kondub, referring to Leni Lemcke, who is a second-year student at the University of St Andrew’s in Scotland. “And she improved to earn All-FCIAC, All-State and win the State Open as a senior. We have that talent and dedication this year, too.”
