TORRINGTON–Staples girls basketball made it two for two against non-conference foe Torrington this winter, going on the road and winning 60-31 on Thursday. The teams had met in Westport earlier in January with the Wreckers winning that one 54-37.
The rematch was no match as Staples jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and a 34-15 halftime advantage. The Staples defense has held opponents in the 20s or 30s in eight of its wins thus far.
Chloe Smith had quite a game with 20 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block.
Emma Asiel poured in 13 points to go along with a trio of assists and pair of steals. Marley Belzer scored 12, grabbed six rebounds, a steal and blocked two shots.
Freya Harvey had four points as well as five assists, four rebounds and a half dozen steals.
Sam Selig scored four, had four rebounds and came away with two steals of her own. Maeve Best contributed four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Staples is home today for a Friday night FCIAC clash with Fairfield Warde at 7 p.m. The Wreckers are 10-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play; the Mustangs stand at 7-4 and 4-3.
