NEW CANAAN — In a battle of FCIAC rivals, host New Canaan defeated Staples 2-1 in Class L State Tournament first round action Wednesday.

New Canaan, the No. 6 seed, ended an otherwise strong season for No. 11 Staples and moved on to face No. 3 Southington in the quarterfinals Friday.

Staples had a solid regular season, going 11-5 overall.
