WETHERSFIELD – Unbeaten in the regular season and having reached the FCIAC and Class L State Finals, Staples field hockey’s only kryptonite this fall was Darien.
The No. 3 Blue Wave became the first team to shut out this Staples squad, captured in the state championship with a 1-0 win over the No. 1 Wreckers at Wethersfield High on Saturday afternoon.
Darien also beat Staples 2-1 with a double overtime, penalty stroke victory in the conference championship.
The Wreckers were the two-time state champs, beating Darien both times, and also claimed last year’s FCIAC title.
All in all, Staples has bragging rights over Darien, having beaten the Blue Wave four times and settling for a tie in the only other pinnacle-game meeting between the foes.
The Wreckers welcomed some standout freshmen to the lineup and will have a solid core of returnees next fall. They will also say goodbye to some key cogs in their recent success with a large group of seniors graduating.
Eve Dolan, Catherine Cirasuolo, Mary Stevens, Olivia Pattinson, Ella Ledenko and Paige Knesich are seniors who will leave big shoes to fill as the Wreckers look to carry on their winning tradition.
