WESTPORT — The Staples High field hockey team (10-3) heads into the regular season finale at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, against visiting Trumbull, holding a one-point lead over Greenwich atop the FCIAC West Division.

Coach Ian Tapsall’s Wreckers have won three in a row, all via shutouts, following a 3-2 setback to Greenwich on Oct. 11.

First came a 6-0 triumph over Fairfield Ludlowe. That was followed by a 9-0 win over Stamford on Oct. 17 and a 10-0 blowout at St. Joseph on Oct. 20.

Goalkeeper Alexa Ninos has posted six shutout wins.

The offense, led by a variety of goal scorers and setup players, including Tyla Ozgen, Emma Nahon, Sofia Fidalgo, Alexa Hackett, Emma Larit, Francine Stevens and Charlotte Strange, has piled up six or more goals in eight games this fall.

The big tests will come in the FCIAC tourney when the Wreckers will likely have to get past the likes of East Division leaders Darien and Wilton, the only conference foes aside from Greenwich to beat Staples.

Also in the mix of top teams are Ridgefield and New Canaan, both of which Staples defeated this season.
