NEW HAVEN – The CIAC tournament opened at James Hillhouse High School amidst a whirl of energy and excitement. Ultimately, perennial powerhouse Hillhouse Academics dominated the game and beat Staples 51-30.

Hillhouse, winners of 10 state championships over the last 30 years, started the game with a stifling defense. But Staples defense kept the game close. The score was 8-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Hillhouse’s defense was turned up a notch after the first, as the defense created turnover opportunities and transition layups. Hillhouse senior point guard Trinity Moody led the Academics with 13 points and numerous assists.

Although the Wreckers made a strong effort in the second half, they could never close the Academics lead.

Notable Staples performances include senior captain McKenzie Didio with 15 points and freshman Nora Fuld with four points and multiple rebounds.

Despite the results, it was a great season for the seniors and the game provided invaluable playoff experience to the underclassman.
