WESTPORT — The Staples boys volleyball team saw its successful season end in the qualifying round of the Class L State Tournament last Friday.

The No. 14 Wreckers lost that contest to No. 19 Stamford 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23).

Staples got 14 kills from Sawyer Makl, 13 kills from Pierce Brown and seven from Mason Siskind.

Brian Divino led the Wreckers with 35 assists and had an ace.

Anthony Cheung had 10 digs and Brown and Divino each had nine digs.

In retrospect, Staples had a nice turnaround season. After winning just three matches a year ago, the Wreckers posted 12 victories and qualified for the FCIAC and state tourneys.

In the earlier FCIAC competition, Staples fell 3-1 to Darien in the quarterfinals before state tourney got underway. Andy Hutchison has been covering school sports — including Staples athletics — as well as news and feature stories in Fairfield County, since the 1990s.
