WESTPORT — Not even rain can slow down Staples boys tennis.
The Wreckers, led by Coach Kris Hrisovulos, won their 12th match out of13 this spring, defeating host Trumbull 5-2 Saturday afternoon. It was rescheduled from an earlier date that was postponed by rain.
The match before that was a rain-shortened 6-0 victory over host Danbury on Thursday.
Staples has won six straight since a hard-fought 4-3 setback to Greenwich on April 24.
“Together, we have secured some impressive victories and have shown great resilience under pressure. Our collective goal of peak performance towards the end of the season seems within reach, and I believe we are heading in the right direction,” Hrisovulos said. “I am confident that with our determination and teamwork we will achieve even greater success in the upcoming matches.”
In the win over Trumbull, top singles player Noah Wolff won, 7-6, 6-4, and No. 4 Robert Jacob prevailed in a three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Doubles wins against Trumbull included No. 1 Derek Hafiz and Brett Lampert, 6-0, 6-2; No. 2 Mattie Guadarrama and Shreyas Gorre, 6-1, 6-1, and Alekos Vergakis and Kieran Anand, 6-2, 6-1.
Against Danbury, Hafiz and Wolff, playing No. 2 in this match, both won, 6-0, 6-0; No. 3 Robert Jacob was victorious, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 4 Alex Cozzolino won, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, the top tandem of Guadarrama and Sebastian Elizondo led their match 3-0 in the first set before rain halted play. Anand and Gorre won, 6-0, 6-0, at second doubles and Matthew Darien and Jonny Greenspan won, 6-0, 6-0, at third doubles.
The Wreckers will host St. Joseph of Trumbull at 4 p.m. Monday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
