WILTON-The Wilton boys soccer team played their best match of the season last night, at Kristine Lilly Field.
Staples was patient, possessing and probing for an edge. They got one 10 minutes before the end of the match. Chase Watkins – called up from junior varsity earlier that day, and making his first-ever varsity appearance – delivered an arcing corner kick. Ben Douglas, the tall co-captain and a defender who comes forward on set pieces – outleaped everyone, to head home.
But the hosts came right back. They scored two minutes later on a deflected shot, and two minutes after that on a 20-yard rocket to take the lead, and the match, 2-1.
The Wreckers, now 2-3-1, travel to Farmington Sports Academy on Saturday, for a 3 p.m. contest against upstate rival Glastonbury. It’s part of the first-ever FCIAC-CCC Challenge Cup, pitting teams in the top two leagues in the state against each other.
