SOUTHBURY — The Staples boys basketball team defeated Kennedy of Waterbury 67-44 in the opening round of the Pomperaug Holiday Tournament on Friday.

With the win, the Wreckers (3-0) will face the host Panthers in Saturday’s championship game at 3 p.m.

Sam Clachko matched his uniform number 24 with two dozen points to lead the offense. Staples had two more players in double figures as Charlie Bowman and Dhilan Lowman each scored 10. Adam Udell added eight for the Wreckers.
