WILTON–Staples baseball won a pair of three-run decisions on the road, extending its winning streak to seven and improving to 9-3 overall. The Wreckers qualified for the state playoffs with a 7-4 victory at Greenwich on Wednesday and continued their winning ways with a 6-3 doubling of host Wilton on Friday.
The Wilton game came down to the final frame. The Wreckers scored three in the top of the seventh inning to turn a tie game in their favor.
Chase Landgraf reached on an error and used his speed to score the go ahead run following a pair of stolen bases and another Wilton error. Mark Kelly added an RBI double and Bruce Schlegelmilch doubled home another run.
Kelly finished the game with a pair of doubles and three RBI and Vince Vega knocked in a run. Nolan Walters and Jules Cicero had doubles.
Schlegelmilch pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run for the win, and Lukas Snow tossed 3 2/3 frames of two-run ball.
In the win over Greenwich, Kelly had a double and drove in four runs. The Hobart-bound third baseman / pitcher had quite a week, going 6-for-11 (.545 batting average) with ten RBIs, a homer and five doubles. The dual threat also earned a win and save on the mound. Kelly earned the win and homered to tie the game in the seventh inning of a 6-5 edging of Darien on Monday. He got the save and Charles Fitch picked up the win at Wilton.
