WILTON — So close …

State championship laurels eluded the Staples boys and girls tennis teams as both fell to teams from Greenwich High in the CIAC Class LL state tournament finals Thursday. The matches were played at Wilton High School.

Staples boys, ranked No. 5 going into the tourney, fell 4-1 to the No. 2 Greenwich Cardinals. The Wreckers’ No. 2 doubles tandem of Clint Graham and Jared Even picked up the lone Staples victory of the day.

The No. 11 Staples girls’ successful season ended with a 4-0 loss to the Cards, the top-ranked girls team in the playoffs.
