Charlie Fitch was as efficient as he was dominant, setting the Staples baseball program record for fewest pitches in a seven-inning complete game effort, an 8-1 win at Danbury on Wednesday.
Fitch needed only 59 offerings — an average of less than six per frame — to easily break the previous record of 74 tossed by David Speer who did it with 74 more than a dozen years ago. Speer went on to play six seasons of minor league ball. Speer was an All FCIAC honoree for three seasons, 2008-10.
Fitch foiled the Hatters with a four-hit effort. He allowed one earned run and struck out four.
Fitch did not walk a batter.
The Wreckers provided plenty of offense early, scoring six runs in the second inning.
Cole Landgraf homered, had two hits, and drove in three runs. Vincent Vega homered and knocked in a pair. Jules Cicero collected three hits, including a double, and drove in two.
The Wreckers improved to 13-4 and will host St. Joseph of Trumbull Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
