STAMFORD–But for one opponent, the Staples varsity girls tennis team has enjoyed a perfect season. But it’s a pretty big “but.”
The “but” of the Wreckers season has been their close rivals, the Darien Blue Wave. Staples’ only losses this season were against Darien; once in the regular season, once in the FCIAC finals and once again in the semifinal match of the CIAC tournament.
Yesterday, Staples fell to Darien 4-2 to end the team’s season. Head coach Jennifer Wider reported that Staples’ Jenna Kornbluth won her singles match and Jordana Latzman and Audrey Kercher won their doubles. A “tough loss,” according to Wider.
Though the varsity team will play no further this season, four tennis players have been invited to the state invitational tournament. Amelia Galin and Karenna Birns will play singles and Latzman / Kercher will play doubles. The tournament runs next Monday through Friday at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
