GREENWICH–All in all, it was a winning week for the Staples girls tennis team as the Wreckers took two of three matches to improve to 5-1 this spring. The lone setback was a 7-0 defeat to host Greenwich, on Thursday.
On Monday, the Wreckers defeated visiting Stamford 7-0. In singles play Olivia Lazar won 6-0, 6-1, Amelia Berkowitz and Hunter Rossetter both won 6-1, 6-0 and Kayla Stanley came out on top 6-1, 6-4.
Doubles play featured Azita Vazhayil and Rachel Guzman winning 6-0, 6-1, Dylan Lehrer and Devyn Peffer winning 6-1, 6-1 and Abby Bandini and Raleigh Spikin combining for a 6-1, 6-3 triumph.
Against Darien, in a home match on Tuesday, Staples won 6-1. Lazar battled back from a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. Adrianna Gavriloiu won 6-3, 6-1 at third singles. Kat Siegner also won 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth spot.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Aanya Gandhi and Guzman won 6-2, 6-3. No. 2 Isa Alfageme and Vazhayil won 6-2, 6-1. No. 3 Lehrer and Emme Steinberg came back to win 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 (match tiebreaker).
