HARTFORD — Facing the Class LL State Tournament’s top seed, the No. 3 Staples High girls’ soccer team left little doubt as to which team is, in fact, the best. The Wreckers topped Cheshire, unbeaten in the regular season, 4-1 in Sunday’s pinnacle contest under the lights at Trinity Health Stadium.

Annabel Edwards scored a second-half hat-trick to earn Most Valuable Player accolades, and Natalie Chudowsky netted a goal in the opening half. Evelyn Chudowsky set up two of Edwards’ goals.

The Wreckers, en route to the finals, did not surrender a goal in four state playoff games, following up a first-round bye. Staples posted a 5-0 blanking of Greenwich and 3-0 shutouts over both Wilton and Glastonbury.

The Wreckers lost just once in the regular season, falling to Class L state winner St. Joseph, which also beat Staples in the FCIAC championship game.

“The girls were unbelievable all season and I’m so proud of their work tonight. They deserve all the plaudits they get. They are a credit to themselves, their families and Staples High School,” Staples Coach Barry Beattie said.

Members of the state champion Wreckers include Evelyn Bory, Samantha Henske, Ashley Podziba, Camille Kolek, Leigh Foran, Ryan Lapatine, Sophie Hill, Samantha DeWitt, Coco Crombie, Olivia Kovics, Gabriela de Brito, Evelyn Chudowsky, Natalie Chudowsky, Annabel Edwards, Reilly McGeehan, Finlay Cohen, Juliet Tracy, Parker Pretty, Katherine Spada, Kathryn Fitzgerald, Caitlin Chu, Talia Moskowicz, Charlotte Franklin, Neva Mermagen, Katherine Shackelford, Daisy Chung, Franca Strandall, Adeline Bozeman, Lilly Murphy, Freya Harvey and Madeline Johnson.
