WESTPORT — The Staples girls’ basketball team started the season off with a 46-27 win against Norwalk yesterday.

Coming off of two winning seasons, the team is determined to continue their success. Mia Didio, a senior captain, set the tone of the game by nailing a three-pointer in the first minute. This intensity carried throughout the first quarter with fast-paced, high-energy movement.

“We knew that we had to transition fast and get aggressive,” Didio said. “We came out with a lot of intensity.”

Fellow senior captain McKenzie Didio was the leading scorer, finishing the game with 15 points.

Their aggressive offense and bewildering defense allowed the Wreckers to maintain the lead for the entire game. The coach attributed this to the team’s depth of experience on a varsity court.

“We have four seniors that started and a junior,” Paco Fabian, the head coach, said. “We had shown a lot of experience early in the game, and we built a really big lead.”

For Fabian, a graduate of and former basketball player at Norwalk High School, this game was particularly special.

“All day I was thinking about it, and I couldn’t get it out of my head,” Fabian said. “Playing an old high school is a lot of fun.”

If they continue to play with the same assured maturity and intensity, Staples’ girls basketball is expected to excel throughout the season.

Staples will next play New Fairfield away on Dec. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
